Two weeks to go until the first ever Leeds GovJam! Over on Eventbrite you could see the 30+ people already signed up to be part of it and book your place to join them. Leeds was also linking up with jams around the world as part of the Global GovJam — a 48-hour challenge to rock the public sector.

The 2014 Global GovJam was in its fourth year, and Leeds joined a growing international community of cities running simultaneous events. Below are the countries where people gathered to try out new ways of working on public services.

The Global GovJam brings together public sector innovators from around the world for a focused 48-hour burst of creative problem-solving. Participants form teams, identify real challenges facing their communities, and rapidly prototype new approaches to public services. The jam format encourages people to step away from traditional bureaucratic processes and instead embrace design thinking, user research, and iterative testing. It is a space where assumptions are challenged, ideas are refined quickly, and learning happens through doing. For anyone passionate about improving how public services work, the jam offers a supportive environment to experiment, collaborate, and make a tangible difference in just two days.

Leeds GovJam is part of this wider global movement, connecting local talent with an international network of like-minded changemakers. Local teams bring their unique understanding of the city's needs while drawing inspiration from approaches tried in other countries. The collaborative energy is remarkable, with mentors, volunteers, and participants all contributing their skills. People from diverse backgrounds come together, sharing techniques and methods that can transform how public sector challenges are tackled. The experience often sparks lasting connections and ongoing projects that continue well beyond the jam weekend itself, sustaining the momentum for positive change.

At its heart, the GovJam is about people and community. It attracts those who want to learn new skills, share their own expertise, and contribute to better public services. The relaxed, friendly atmosphere helps participants feel comfortable stepping outside their usual roles. Whether someone is new to service design or has years of experience, there is something valuable to gain. The emphasis is on collaboration rather than competition, with teams supporting one another through the creative process. This spirit of openness and shared purpose is what makes each jam a unique and memorable experience that leaves participants inspired to keep innovating.
